The Japanese Academy of San Diego (JASD) opened doors to Elementary school-age students in 2013 with a single kindergarten class as an extension of Tsumiki Preschool. It was created for families who wanted their children to continue Japanese immersion learning on a consistent weekday basis after graduating from Tsumiki.
At that time, most Japanese programs in the area were weekend-only or supplemental. JASD became the first Japanese immersion elementary school in San Diego offering a full-day, weekday program rather than an after-school or Saturday class.
Since then, our school has steadily grown, now serving students from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. JASD now provides a continuous preschool-to-elementary pathway, allowing children to build their language and academic skills step by step through a developmentally appropriate immersion curriculum.
JASD is a place where children learn Japanese language and culture deeply and meaningfully, while also building strong English skills. Our goal is for students to become truly bilingual and biliterate speakers of Japanese and English with cultural understanding, global awareness, and the confidence to use both languages naturally in their daily lives and future studies.
