CLASSES

Japanese Academy of San Diego (JASD) offers small, carefully structured classes designed to support bilingual, biliterate growth and strong academic foundations.

Small Class Sizes

Classes are intentionally small so teachers can provide more support to each student. Our class ratio will be no more than 12 students to one teacher which allows more interaction, frequent feedback, and many opportunities for students to practice both Japanese and English in meaningful ways.

Specialized Subject Teachers

Beginning in the early grades, students learn from specialized teachers for core subjects such as Japanese language, English language arts, math, and social studies/science. Each teacher brings expertise in their subject area as well as experience in language arts bilingual instruction, ensuring that content learning and language development grow together.

Support for ELL and JLL Learners

To meet the needs of students with different language backgrounds, JASD’s Elementary School program provides small-group instruction for:

  • ELL (English Language Learners) who need extra support in English
  • JLL (Japanese Language Learners) who are newer to Japanese or need more focused practice

These groups are formed by grade level or level depending on the students needs. Instruction is age-appropriate and aligned with classroom content. Small-group sessions give students targeted help with vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, helping them build confidence and keep pace with the curriculum.

Overall, the class structure at JASD’s Elementary School program is designed so that every student—whether stronger in English, Japanese, or both—receives the attention and support needed to thrive academically and linguistically.
