To support students’ energy and well-being, the Japanese Academy of San Diego (JASD) emphasizes healthy, balanced meals and snacks as part of the school day. Families and school work together so children can stay focused and ready to learn.
Morning Snack
Students bring a snack from home each day and may eat it during the morning recess break. Families are encouraged to pack simple, nutritious options such as fruit, crackers, or other items that will keep children satisfied and energized until lunchtime.
Lunch Program
JASD offers a well-balanced hot lunch program based on Japanese cuisine four days a week. Lunches are prepared with care and served hot and fresh, featuring Japanese fusion dishes with occasional Western influences. Typical menus may include rice, vegetables, and Japanese-style main dishes, alongside familiar Western favorites. Families who choose not to participate in the lunch program, or on days when lunch is not provided, may send a home-packed lunch with their child.
Afternoon Snack (for After School Care)
Students who stay for after school care are required to bring an additional afternoon snack from home. This snack is eaten during the after school care period and should be more filling than a light treat so that children can comfortably participate in homework time and play until pick-up.
Cultural Learning Through Food
Whenever possible, the lunch menu reflects traditional and modern Japanese foods, helping children connect daily life with language and culture. By regularly seeing and tasting items such as rice dishes, soups, and seasonal Japanese flavors, students gain familiarity with Japanese food culture in a natural, enjoyable way. At the same time, occasional Western-style items help create variety and support families from diverse backgrounds.
Through this shared approach to meals and snacks, JASD aims to make eating at school both nourishing and educational—another way for students to grow, learn, and enjoy time together.
