Our Curriculum
Each class receives age-appropriate materials focusing not only on academic fundamentals but also on basic daily routines and self-help skills. We promote independence in task performance and cooperative peer play throughout our curriculum.
- Language/Reading: Group conversation, books, vocabulary expansion, letter recognition, and sound-letter associations
- Music: Singing, dancing, rhythm instruments, finger play, and rhythmic movement
- Social Studies: Learning about families, people of different cultures, maps, holidays, and developing social skills through interactive play
- Art and Craft: Experimenting with different art media and materials, with emphasis on proper use of scissors, crayons, paint, glue, and other tools for both structured and creative projects
- Math: Learning numbers, size, shapes, counting, colors, color mixing, and calendar skills
- Science: Exploring through the senses, learning about earth, plants, seasons, animals, and insects through themes that follow the seasons, holidays, and cultural events
Cultural Celebrations and Annual Events
At Tsumiki Preschool, we celebrate both Japanese and American traditions throughout the year, providing children with a rich multicultural experience:
- August: Start of school year
- September: Jugoya (full moon) celebration
- October: Pumpkin patch field trip, Undo-kai (field day), Halloween party
- November: Thanksgiving
- December: Holiday performance
- January: New Year & Mochi pounding festival
- February: Setsubun (bean throwing)
- March: Girls’ Day Hinamatsuri celebration, Cherry Blossom Festival performance (Balboa Park)
- April: Senior appreciation performance (San Diego Keiro-kai)
- May: Boys’ Day Kodomonohi celebration, Graduation ceremony & end-of-the-year performance
- June: Japanese Maritime Defense Force port welcoming (timing may vary per year)
- July: Tanabata Festival, Nagashi somen (cold noodle) & watermelon party
